There is a house in New Orleans They call the Rising Sun. It’s been the ruin of many a poor girl And now I’m only one. If I had heard what my mama said I’d been at home today. But being so young and foolish one Let a gambler lead me astray. My mother, she’s a tailor Sewed those new sweet blue jeans. My sweetheart, he’s a hard drunkard Way down in New Orleans. Go tell my baby sister Never do like I have done. To shun the house in New Orleans They call the Rising Sun. One foot is on the platform, The other one on this train, Well I’m going back To wear that ball and chain. I’m going back to New Orleans My race is almost run. I’m going back to spend my life ‘Neath the house of the rising sun.

I’m goin’ down in Georgia on a horn, Goin’ down in Georgia on a horn, Oh Lordy me, trouble that I see, Goin’ down in Georgia on a horn. I ain’t got my right mind today, I ain’t got my right mind today, Oh Lordy me, trouble that I see, I ain’t got my right mind today. Oh Lord, won’t you please come down here, Oh Lord, won’t you please come down here, Oh Lordy me, trouble that I see, Oh Lord, won’t you please come down here.

She come down Justine, Tell me I want to talk just a little while, Ain’t you goin’ down and fight For your wife and child? I told her no! Baby you know I don’t want to go. She come down here And she shook my hand, She said, Daddy I want you to go down And fight for me like a man, I told her no! Baby you know I don’t want to go. She said the Red Cross people They treat you mighty fine, They mixing everything up With whiskey and wine, I told her no! Baby you know I don’t want to go, Justine I ain’t goin’ Down to no Red Cross door. She come down here Talkin’ to me about the war, I told her baby I ain’t done nothing to go there for, I told her no! Baby you know I don’t want to go. She come down here And she fell down on her knees, I said baby I have to look somewhere For your butter and cheese. She said Daddy I just come down to tell you so, You better go running Down to that Red Cross store, I told her no! Baby you know I don’t want to go, Justine I ain’t goin’ Down to no Red Cross door.

Bring a little water Silvy, Bring a little water now, Bring a little water Silvy, Every little once in a while. Don’t you see me coming, Don’t you see me now, Don’t you see me coming, Every little once in a while.

I’m going to ask you a question, Please answer if you can. Is there anybody here that can tell me, What is the soul of a man? I’ve travelled in different countries, I’ve travelled foreign lands, I’ve found nobody to tell me, What is the soul of a man. Oh won’t somebody tell me, Answer if you can! Oh won’t somebody tell me, Tell me what is the soul of a man? I saw a crowd standing a’talking, I just came up right on time. We’re hearing the doctor and the lawyer, Say a man ain’t nothing but his mind. I read the bible often, I tried to read it right. As far as I can understand, A man is more than his mind. Oh won’t somebody tell me, Answer if you can! Oh won’t somebody tell me, Tell me what is the soul of a man?

Make me down a pallet on your floor, Make me down a pallet on your floor, Just make me down a pallet on your floor, Make it so your man will never know. Don’t ever drive a stranger from your door, Don’t ever drive a stranger from your door, Don’t ever drive a stranger from your door, He may be your best friend you don’t know. Just take one pillow off your feather bed, Just take one pillow off your feather bed, Just take one pillow off your feather bed, And put it on your loving daddy’s head. He’s a country man and he just done moved to town, He’s a country man and he just done moved to town, He’s a country man he just done moved to town, He done sold his cotton now he is walking round. Just make him down a pallet on your floor, Just make him down a pallet on your floor, Just make him down a pallet on your floor, And send him back to the fields so he can raise some more.

You gotta laugh, You gonna laugh real hard, When she takes her love away, You gonna cry, Take a look at yourself, There ain’t nuthin that you can say, Don’t go dancin to the Darktown strutters ball, Don’t go dancin to the Darktown strutters ball.

Yes I’m leaving in the morning, Mama, But I don’t know where to go. Cause the woman I’ve been living for twenty years, Mama, Says she don’t want me no more. Rather see my coffin coming, Lordy, Lord through my back door. Than to have that good looking woman telling to my face, Mama, That she couldn’t use me no more. I got grasshoppers in my pillow, Baby, I got crickets all in my meal. I got tacks in my shoes, Mama, And they are sticking in my heel. Papa may be crazy this time, Papa ain’t nobody’s fool! Before I stand that doggone way you’re carrying on, Mama, Go to bucking like a Georgia mule.

about

Julien Biget : chant, bouzouki, guitare slide
